Gardener's Choice

Last week I found myself immersed in a nightly viewing of BBC2's RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2012. Not only was it pleasing on the eye but easy on the ear too, all hushed voices and soothing sounds.

Episode 11 was my favourite because one of the presenters was wearing a floral number that was bang on trend for now. Rachel de Thame's sartorial clothes choices were delightful. These trousers from Zara were the pick of the bunch so to speak.

Starry Sparkly night

Well thanks to some eejit(s) who decided to cut through the BT wires in an attempt to get copper wires I was left without internet of phone access for 56 hours! This was not good. Therefore this post is later than intended. Plus I couldn't read any blogs, browse the internet, tweet - in fact all manner of everyday nonsense I engage in. It made me bereft. However I did realise I was so new school and reliant on all things geeky. Thank goodness for my iphone and 3G. It made me wish I'd got 3G on my ipad but I know where all this geekiery gets me now.

Post no internet trauma I made a trip to Staples and purchased some good old fashioned items that had I had during internet trauma I would have been able to do some other work. The said items are a stapler and a hole punch. Simple fare but now I realise they are exceedingly useful. My project is to complete my home office in the New Year, I'm getting organised and this is scaring me.

Back to Friday night which was the point of this post. I actually went to a corporate Christmas party. We didn't stay very long as I didn't know anyone but it was really nice and I had fun whilst I was there. I wore a gorgeous Isabella Oliver 365collection sequin dress from their S/S11 collection and sparkly gold shoes. Not Miu Miu but Zara.

Not great photos taken by Mr MDS on the iphone but they'll do. My dress was party perfect as were the M&S Autograph 15 denier tights and my Zara shoes. The Zara shoes were such fun to look at. Mr MDS and I took a walk over the Hungerford footbridge and St Paul's and all the sights looked lovely. There was a Christmas market on the Southbank so we strolled around it to the sounds of Bing Crosby and Doris Day. It was actually really romantic and quite cinematic. Especially as we were dressed up to the nines. Isn't it funny how the simplest of evenings can be the best.

Mulled wine and hot roasted chestnuts completed my outfit.

Retail Review - Zara

Apologies in advance for not having nice press images from the Zara PR team to load up but a) I never get them and b) I've given up requesting them.

However in all other areas Zara is the height of retail efficiency. Owned by the Inditex Group, the first Zara store opened in 1975. Today, Inditex is probably the world's fastest growing retailer and Zara has just overtaken Gap to become the worlds largest clothing retailer. Zara prides itself on its ability to compete with quality brands at affordable prices. It is claimed that Zara needs just two weeks to develop a new product and get it to stores and launches around 10,000 new designs each year. Zara has resisted the industry-wide trend towards transferring production to low-cost countries. Perhaps its most unusual strategy was its policy of zero advertising; the company preferred to invest a percentage of revenues in opening new stores instead.

That said, Zara has the most annoying clothing tags and quality is variable. Yet Zara has the ability to draw you in with its great on trend numbers and some of its own consistent items.

Thus far in the season Zara is paying homage to or inspired by Gucci and Chloe. In fact it will draw upon all the catwalk trends and deliver everything. The fast turnover means you have to buy if you love the item as it's likely to be gone for good. This is particularly true with their shoes and belts - literally gone in a blink. Many a time I've kicked myself for dithering or being good(not spending!), or thinking I'll find something nicer elsewhere.

The layout of the stores is clear and items are always grouped in colour combinations. Changing rooms are sparse and lighting harsh so if it looks good on - its great!

Last season S/S 08 the collection was more miss than hit but this season Zara looks like it is shaping up for a great one!
