When you wake up too old

I love this skirt from Zara.

I've got a good pair of legs and on that basis with a nice pair of tights what is to stop me. My age and lifestyle. Somehow this look doesn't translate to a mother in the suburbs who mainly works from home as a writer and the occasional styling job. If I were younger and if I were a woman not in possession of children and all my other things I would happily snaffle it up. How did this happen? I've basically woken up too old to buy certain clothes. Why, I avoided some great camouflage trousers the other day for a camouflage scarf based on the same reasoning. Mmm That's Not My Age is going to have to give me a good steer away from the short skirts and a talking to on casual glamour.

  1. Be wary of being TOO cautious... I went through a phase of dressing by my CV (i.e. age/job sterotypes) and it didn't work at all! I'm back to dressing eccentrically now, CV be damned (except of course in line with policy at work, tis the rules).

  2. How about wearing this skirt with leggings/thick tights and biker boots? I'm nearing 39 and whilst the length of this skirt scares me I know I could wear it with more modest items

    Buy it, it's gorgeous!

  3. Ah yes the fear of becoming mutton! There have been various things over the last few years I have fallen in love with but not bought because I feel I am about 20 years to old to carry it off. Not that I am suddenly dressing like a granny or anything but I do believe there is a line.....

    1. I don't like the idea of mutton but there is a line and I have seen many who have not heeded this fact and have failed to cross it! xx

  4. I think that with tights and a cosy jumper it would look great - go get it!

  5. Young girls wear such stupid things (candida denim shorts over festering nylon tights in summer?!) that a gorgeous classy lady like you can wear anything, without looking like those silly twats.

  6. No rules, no age limits, I'm sad you even think that way. If you want it go and get it and stuff it. x

  7. If your 'still small voice' is telling you no, there is probably a good reason. My forty something sister's and my favourite phrase is 'just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

  9. I was talking about this the other day re crop tops. I get that people like to say age doesn't matter, but sometimes it does, if you don't feel comfortable in it or if it will stay hung in the wardrobe with the tags on there's no point buying it. BUT on the other hand I can totally see you in this with some wooly tights and a low heel boot! x

  12. I bet Stacy Lomman would show you a great way to style that skirt which would make you feel totally comfortable! I should pack her up and send her to England for you :-)

  13. Haha! I would happily head off to England, I love it there! As a designer and a woman over 40, I really don't like to be limited. I just hate that society puts this weird cut off date on something like wearing a cute short skirt. If you've got great legs... show them off! You should be proud.
To me, it's all in the execution. A twenty year old can look trashy in a mini if it's styled in a trashy way, while a forty year old can look sophisticated. Pair it with a pretty, fine gauge turtleneck and suddenly it's not so risky. You're completely modest. Opaque tights are always an option. And a smart structured blazer that cinches the waist would look great and suggest professionalism.
