High Street Pick of the Week - The 2011 Style File

The Seventies were awash with fabulous shirts. Shirts that referenced the 40s worn with tank tops and flared jeans or a-line or maxi skirts. Pattern and flowing sleeves created a strong feminine feel as well as heated rolled hair!

This little number from Warehouse ticks the boxes on all fronts. Just add flares.

No self respecting 70s gal would have gone without a summer basket as part of her carefree lifestyle. Of course she would have been part inspired by Jane Birkin and part inspired by Yves Saint Laurent.

You can grab yourself a bit of 70s summer cool with this Moroccan Basket from Jigsaw. At £49.00 you get an individual look as no two baskets are the same.

One of the many similarities between the 30s & 70s is the prevalence of long sleeve dresses in chiffon.

Chiffon is a material much beloved of these two eras. And no one is exploiting the 70s better than River Island on the high street at the moment. Their revival of the iconic Chelsea Girl brand, well iconic if you were someone who needed fashion in the mid to late 70s and early 80s. That and Snob.

a wonderful archive image from Chelsea Girl

In fact so proud are River Island of their heritage, they have moved on from selling a few Chelsea Girl bags and revived the ethos of the past. However what they are doing best is their Seventies Girl selection of garments and this dress in particular

I have no price, it isn't on the website but the stockist number to call is 0208 991 4904. Maybe the River Island press office will let me know. It is a wonderful example of an all year round dress that will see you through many an occasion. Good old River Island or is that Chelsea Girl!

PS I'm worried this dress is sold out but least think of it as a reintroduction to some great pieces at River Island you didn't think existed!

Continuing with the theme of building a wardrobe based on clothes which draw upon the 1930s and 1970s, it would be remiss not to pull out an item from the Biba collection exclusive to House of Fraser. Regardless of your views on appropriation or attempting to recreate the iconic Biba, the collection yields wearable and gorgeous individual items to mix with your other garments. I would say head to toe Biba would look, shall we say,.. a little try hard. Don't even think of passing it off as ironic!

The Biba Panther print blouse is reduced to £52 It would work well with your new flared jeans or a skirt or wide leg trousers. The panther print makes me think of Wallis Simpson's jewellery or should I refer to her as the Duchess of Windsor, either or the blouse will be a useful addition for now and for years to come.

Apologies for small image but it wasn't available on my press images account and House of Fraser have (they are not the only ones) not thought about making images off their website easily accessible and useful for fashion bloggers.

No self respecting 30s or 70s girl would be without her palazzo pants. But what to wear with these super sassy trousers. Well, the sun has been shining so forward thinking is the order of the day. I'm still living my island of Mustique fantasy and am thinking day to night.

By day wear it poolside on its own and by night just add the palazzo pants.

No self respecting Island of Mustique 1970s chick can be without her kaftan, think Princess Margaret, the groovy royal. I know, I should be all about the Jagger... Bianca but well lets say we give the royals a go after all it is their year.

Too often high street kaftans draw upon the boho chick look (think Kate & Sienna) but luckily East have captured the essence of the late 60s early 70s with a retro print kaftan retailing handily at near 1970s prices (well in comparison to the designer alternatives) for £29. It is a gorgeous print and will be in store soon. This is the stockist number to find out when 0208 877 6543

To belt or not to belt that is the question. Actually the feminine belt became a substitute for the corset. The corset created the shape of an outfit before the belt. Of course we all know Gok needs to lay off belting but it is a key style piece when it comes to dressing up an outfit. In short a belt or a ribbon or a scarf added to an outfit is aiming to create a focal point on the body.

Where to place a belt? The 3 points on the body are the empire line, the waist and the hips. In days of yore or costume drama terms the empire line is below the bust, top of ribs, think Jane Austen. Then the waist is the idealistic hour glass figure think Marilyn Monroe, or 50s pin up. Then the dropped waist or hips is the low slung belt option so beloved of the boho look that dominated in the early noughties but more importantly in current fashion terms the dropped waist look of the 1920s.

When it comes to recreating a 1930s or 1970s vibe then you have to think the chain belt. And you can wear it high, middle or low.

I've found this number at Reiss which ticks a lot of boxes in terms of creative and sumptuous detail for wide let trousers, a maxi skirt or jumpsuit. Part Ali, part Wallis it will be a wardrobe wonder!

The wedge is an essential for a stylish wardrobe and is a key ingredient to any 1930s or 1970s pastiche or hommage.

It has been a long held wish of mine to own a Chloe pair - a girl has to dream!

This season the wedge takes on flatter form -some are calling it the 'flatform' but to you and me it is a wedge with a newish twist.

In lieu of a lottery win Mrs MDS is rather taken with these from Office - no picture folks due to silly website not allowing image saving nor having all their pieces on PRShots. Oh well - so click this link to take a peek. Let me know what you think! And do you have any favourites.

High Street Pick of the Week - The 2011 Style File

The order of basics is slightly ramshackled, unintentionally of course but it does mean I need keeping in check so do raise views/wants.

I feel like I'm going slightly off piste which maybe something to do with the really freezing weather we are experiencing in London and elsewhere currently. I sort of feel some jumper love is required but am at a bit of lost to identify what. I really wish there was a twin set around, I have visions of typical 70s market fair, but where to find?? You know the knitted v neck tank coupled with a v neck cardigan and incorporating a white stripe or two.

Without the 70s market stall holder or C&A to come to the rescue I turn to Topshop and their ability to provide something similar to my dream. I remain convinced by the style file factor of the twinset but my imagination is not completely translated to what I'm selecting. But this Topshop twinset combo does provide a feel good factor for that 70s or 30s twist - wear with the flared jeans!

The wild card - every wardrobe needs a wild card. A dress that does all the work for you and you don't have to do anything except add make up, shoes and bag or maybe a cardigan or jacket or coat. I think an item that is a wild card doesn't necessarily fit with current trends or is ever a glamorous number. A fashion wild card works regardless of trends.

It might not be your style and it isn't remotely 1930s or 1970s but this is a good Chanel- esque or even Audrey Hepburn number that will help you out for many an occasion. It will last for years and not really date. If I were you I'd pretend it was vintage...make like Catherine Deneuve in Belle de jour style wise anyway!

The cut of the dress does all the work for you regardless of your body shape.

High Street Pick of the Week - The 2011 Style File

This is the second in the 2011 series of building your wardrobe from recommended items from the high street. Of course if you are not in the UK many of the brands featured will be replicated around the globe in differing regional retailers but lots of the items I will pick no doubt will be available on the internet on global sites.

Last week wide leg jeans were selected and someone asked me to contextualise the basis of the wardrobe. It was a good question although a little difficult to answer preciously as I fearfully of being too prescriptive and not enabling you to be creative.

What probably more useful is to know what I imagine it to be. Because you can challenge my perspective and but your spin on it. I know I'm not thinking of baroque or gothic overtones when I choose items, but say you love crosses and black nail varnish, you could wear the wide leg jeans with a long sleeve grey t-shirt and accessorise with black nails and a gothic cross. I love the cut and looks of the 1930s and 1970s butyou might prefer the 1940s oe 1950s. I love Barbara Streisand's costumes in The Way We Were and I love the Italian chic of Antonioni's L'Eclisse. You will have your favourite looks from films. I much prefer the voluptuous excess of Dolce & Gabanna to the chic minimalism of Celine but of course you might prefer Celine to D&G. I hope with the style file to offer items that you can interpret and wear with the way you'd imagine the items being worn.

What the 2011 style file series offers is a reference for you in respect of building a great workable mix and match wardrobe. I will keep things fairly simple but hope that some items will be wonderful additions.

So back to this weeks pick.

You do need a great versatile skirt and the pencil or sheath skirt is the one regardless of body shape or size. This one is from Zara at £39.99 but you can find one almost anywhere. The reason I've picked this item now and not a top, is that the current crop of sheath skirts are in the right length, make the proportions correct so you can wear them more successfully. Once again it will be the type of top and the accessories you choose that will adjust any misgivings you may have.

You can wear this skirt with a plain white tee, or a completely over the top ruffled shirt. All you have to do is adjust how you compose the look. If you wearing a white t-shirt then hair scraped back in a bun with red lipstick and white plimsolls is a big step away from wearing it with a red almost flamenco style shirt and fishnets and heels. See versatility!
