The Red Dress (part 2)

My seemingly forever MA comes to an end in December. I have called upon you very recently for primary research on my dissertation. This is my final time of asking (I feel quite weepy).

I present to you four images of 1950s screen icons. You may or may not be familiar with all of them. Please tell me who is your favourite and why. I also have a vote in the right hand of the blog on the same four actresses.

Doris Day

Audrey Hepburn

Grace Kelly

Marilyn Monroe

  1. Marilyn, for her vulnerability. She's the one who seems most emotional to me.

  2. Audrey Hepburn, for the clothes and the fact that she always seemed to have an edge of cheeky naughty girl-ness despite the ballerina perfection. I agree with Wendy about Marilyn, but seeing her just makes me feel sad.

  4. Hey,its so sad when its all over isnt it? I miss mine!!

I think Audrey is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen but I will always love Marilyn more; as Wendy says she has a vulnerability that is easy to relate to, and her struggle with her weight is something I often think of when I am struggling with mine!

  5. So beautiful.
    Such style!

  6. Audrey, for her stylish modesty. (Or quasi-modesty anyway.) I adore and admire Marilyn's sensuality, but I can relate more to Audrey.

  7. Grace Kelly - the very embodiment of elegance. She was perfectly named. Plus - she got what all us girls wanted - to be a princess. :-)

  8. Grace Kelly was flawless - and so sexy in an icy way.

  9. I think for me... Audrey, as I personally prefer her style and clothes. I think she could look kooky, elegant, beautiful, gamine and graceful all at the same time. All the women are gorgeous though!

  10. Hi there-all so gorgeous, but Marilyn is my favourite, she always looked so lovely in what she wore and her curves never looked out of place.

  11. Equal parts of each will get any woman everything she ever wanted.

  12. Ok, so having said that I will choose my favorite. Grace Kelly hands down. And not just because my grandfather knew her father.

  17. Definitely DORIS DAY....DORIS DAY is my all time favorite! She epitomizes the best of the 50's and 60's. She is tops in so many categories - movie actress, singer, TV star and all around very nice person both inside and out. I had been a fan since age 10 and followed my dream to California where I eventually met her and she asked me to become her personal secretary and lived with her for nearly 2 years. I saw the real DORIS DAY up-close and personal and she is one great, fun-loving lady. A real class act!

  18. i love all of them, but i think Audrey Hepburn is my favourite. she always seems comfortable in her skin and effortlessly stylish, even when wearing pjamas or something that mere mortals wouldn't dare be photographed in.

Grace Kelly seems the ultimate in feminine and i worship her too. Doris Day has a lot of fun and you know she would be a wonderful person to hang out with. Marilyn has something going on behind the dizzy blonde look.

    hope this is helpful!

  19. Sort of unfair, pitting my two favorites—Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly—against each other. How will I choose?

  20. I bet you all the guys would choose Marilyn!

  21. Grace Kelly. And I think that's based more on her acting and movies I've seen with her. She does cool unapproachable blond and then hits you with something a little deeper and I'm gaga. Audrey is stunning but more one-dimensional. Marilyn I adore, and Doris, sorry, I don't think I've seen many of her films!

  22. AUDREY, of course.

Though she looked fragile, she was stronger than Marilyn. I agree with the person up there who said Marilyn makes her feel sad-- though she looked turbo-charged in her womanhood and sexuality, she was exploited, abused and ultimately killed by men. Not Audrey though. Audrey kept her dignity and her power.

Her sex appeal was the quiet, sophisticated kind. She was more interesting and alluring than Marilyn. And she knew that you can't go wrong with Givenchy.

  24. In my teens I was a massive Marilyn fan, collected postcards to put in albums and everything! But these days I prefer Audrey. I relate to her personally as we have the same haircolour and build. Also I keep seeing that Audrey Style book everywhere that I think first came out years ago. I've flicked through loads of times and each time I love her more. So classy.

  25. I adore Audrey because she is beautiful in a none conventional way but for me it has to be Marilyn. She had this potent sexuality yet seemed so vulnerable and innocent. I like the combination of the two opposing elements. Plus she had the most beautiful face I think I have ever seen.
