Something I threw on...

...from my wardrobe!

This week you have a challenge. It is no good me being a bright spark when it comes to Wednesday's and handing it to you on a plate. So far the bush telegraph had told me someone went and shopped the whole school run look and another got her interview look together for that day and landed a wonderful contract with a great day rate. All good stuff but... none of us can escape the fact hard times are likely to get harder. You should attempt to squirrel away as much as possible - she says with a growing wish list in her head!

So, in a real make do push I challenge you to grab a dress out of the wardrobe you keep saving for best. I don't care if it has sequins or marabou on it - pull it out. Put it on and then go through your knitwear and try cardigans and jumpers on top of it. Select the one you like the best and then add a ribbon around your waist or a skinny belt. I don't care what colour it is nor should you.

Then all you have to do is add knee high boots or some courts or flat pumps. Try not to wear tights. Either go bare legged or be adventurous and wear some fashion editor ankle socks.

Et voila. You've been creative and experimented. Plus you've saved money even if it is only in your head. Never underestimate what is in your wardrobe or what you can do.

Now al you have to do it take a photograph and email me your best efforts if you are brave enough.

  1. Not brave enough! The dress I save for best is the Jigsaw one from last summer with the blue and white sequins you reported on and I got in the sale, I only have a white, camel or bronze coloured cardi and they all look shite. Note to self: Need more cardigans!

  2. Mrs Fab - yes that is a no! You must have other dresses?

  3. It's how I always dress. I'm not precious about any of my frocks and wear them from day to night either with boots or heels. The only thing missing is a cardi but I make do with an old Levi's jacket or my trusty leather shirt-shaped jacket.
I might try the ankle socks and heels today though, if the town centre (and me) are brave enough. x

  5. Oh hmmm, I don't really have any dresses that I save for best. I shall have a rummage later and give it a good go though!

  6. I shall give this a go - but not today, it's freezing here.

What I HAVE done is find an old boring jumper that looks ok, but rolled the sleeves up, added a silk scarf, skinny jeans (not my usual baggy crap) and some jingly silver bangles, flat boots....and I feel great.

Truly, it's not about getting new stuff to wear, is it, it's about having fun with your existing bits and bobs.

New stuff is VERY nice though lol!

  12. What a good challenge! I think I might skip the ankle socks - school put me off the idea for long enough! But knee high/otk socks are good! I will do this tomorrow, thank you for some inspiration!

  16. Just today I wore a dress that I NEVER wear. I wore it with a sheer black turtleneck and no tights. I didn't add the belt. Next time I will. Inspiring post. I love this idea of a recipe for a new outfit.

  18. LOVE this! The key is to have so many "nice" dresses that none of them is too nice to throw into the daily wear mix. I love doing this.

  21. I'm definitely going to try this out. I have a lovely soft black jumper that is a bit small so it's no good to wear with trousers or skirts as there's belly on show (and believe me that is NOT a good thing!) Your idea inspired me to try it over a dress instead. I'll let you know how it works out! xx

  22. I'm in. You have reminded me to get some ankle socks. I have over the knee only and I really need to find a good pair of boots and some pumps for this season. I'm dying to recycle my wardrobe. I've started the clearout and it's like the Tardis in there! Hope you're good xx

  23. Love everything about this suggestion except the cardigan. For me that is. At a certain age ( or size?) cardigans really do make you look like a care home resident. Just sold of a load of mine at a car boot. But dresses and bare legs - yes. Been doing it all summer. Thinking seriously about trying socks but horribly aware that the same care home might be calling me!( Will I see you on Sunday?)

  24. Tried it last night, looked fab! Not only did you save a lovely jumper that was too short to wear with trousers but also a dress that was a bit shapeless around the top half, too birds with one brilliant idea!! xx

  25. Am sitting here in a silk monsoon skirt that I bought years ago but have never worn (keeping for Good), a black polo neck sweater, black fishnets, and my flat, black biker-style boots.

Thank you for this - cheered up my day by a mile.

Would have eed you a photo, but it's taken me from 10am to get the damned thing to copy over to the computer *sigh* technology!
