Since when did Sandals get well sandally again

It is a shocker but one that I have to say, I have very fond memories of - Clarks sandals. Not any old Clarks sandals but thee Clarks sandals. As per mentioned on page 106 of June's British Vogue in the 'More Dash than Cash' section.

I loved my summer sandals and lets face it my mother didn't veer off script for years, it was the same pair but maybe a different colour every summer. When I got fitted for my sandals I knew summer was on its way and I would be able to run wild and stay up later and get tan marks on my feet. I had red, blue, tan and white ones over the years and it was only in my second year of secondary school that I put my foot down and refused to wear any more Clarks shoes or sandals.

Yet up until that point of teenage angst and peer pressure I'd been happy to wear any old shoe as I cared more for larking about and having fun. I saw a pair of what I consider retro sandals in Aldo a couple of weeks ago and was reminded of wearing such a style and have been thinking about buying a pair. So when Vogue featured old school sandals I was hooked. I know I want tan, I'm not sure I'll go Clarks, but then again I do love the buckles and the memories. My mother will have to sit down if she finds me rocking up in a pair!

Did you have these style sandals as a child? What sort of summer memories stick out in your mind?

  1. I remember the Clarks' sandals of my childhood, red or navy leather ones with teardrops cut out at the toe. Mum never allowed white as she considered them dreadfully "common". I'm rather liking those Jesus sandals but £45? I haggled over paying £3 in India for a leather pair a street cobbler made on the spot for me. xxx

  2. I really like these, though my childhood sandals were all birkenstock! I'm not sure I can justify spending on sandals given that it is practically never too hot for closed toes up here in scotland, and I have some birks, but I love the powder pink clarks ones. Maybe if they do a sale!

  6. Wow, those sandals are so retro. I definitely remember sandals like these when I was growing up. Reminds me of days spent at the beach, wearing my mum's homemade dresses and summer holidays making dens out of old blankets and the washing maiden. The current sandals definitely look like a great choice for the hot months ahead. xx

  7. I do remember having sandals like this when small enough to get away with having rugby players legs sticking out from under my Ladybird sundress...

...but as an adult, I need something that lengthens the leg and makes me look less...prop forwardy.

    Really, really cute though :-D

  8. I bought a pair of these last year but they are very flat and not as comfy as I remembered - what size are you?

  9. YES!! Red, sometimes tan or white... always slightly crinkled after a few wears. One year I pestered my dad into buying me 80s jellies- new concept, same shape. ;)

  10. Weirdly I have no memory of my childhood sandals. I remember being utterly in love with my Clarks Princess shoes but they weren't particularly summery. The teen years featured some particularly nasty silver glittery jelly sandals - uck!

  11. Dear Kate, my memory of any childhood shoes is rowing with my mother in the shop over what I was having.

These are very retro. You'll pull them off. I'm not sure I would.

I found a pair of leather sandals I love in a shop in Dalston the other day for £19. I didn't have any money on me but I might have to go back and get them xx

  13. I HAD THOSE and want them for my kids but Clarkes don't seem to do them anymore only those horrid velcro strap shoes which I hate. I would adore Mr Fashion in a pair of bight blue ones (he will love them honest) x

  17. Oh yes Clarks! I always wore Clarks as a child! They are trying to make a lot of their shoes more stylish these days I think but still with a few 'classics' on the shelves too!
