Does your underwear determine your style?

I got to thinking that, is what you wear under your clothes, as defining as the image you portray to the world? Only a few weeks ago a friend remarked how she didn't understand why people didn't have matching underwear.

I nearly choked on my calamari and muttered something incomprehensible, gesticulating my mouth was full. I used the nodding head and wide eyes in agreement look to disguise my bra and pants were of the non matching kind.

In my world a proper fitting bra is paramount and yes, at times, I do wear black pants with black bra, white pants to white bra etc. However, they are not necessarily a matching set and I'll quite happily wear any colour knickers with my bras. My pants draw consists of one purple pair of pants that match my recently purchased purple bra, the rest are a white, black, flesh, red, blue, pink mix of boy shorts. I love boy short/camisole knicker cut. They are all mostly pretty with lace or lacy in design. I love cotton and tend to buy them in M&S.

I do think that I fall into the Amy Winehouse/Patricia Field camp when it comes to underwear - ok now someone is going to tell me Ms Field wouldn't be seen dead without her matching pure silk undies - ditto for Amy. Basically I prefer my bras to pants. I worry about bras and like to wear brightly coloured ones that show - hence purple number - with the right outfit.

When it comes to underwear I'm a tomboy that occasionally plays tiger. How about you?

  1. I actually don't wear a bra very often, perhaps once a week at the most! So I'm more of a knickers girl. I like big pants - well more like little shorts or french knickers or dim knickers that are seam-less and close fitting, good for avoiding vpl! I hate g-strings I find them v uncomfortable personally.
When I do wear a bra I do tend to wear matching knickers though.....

  2. I'm sorry but underwear has nothing to do with what goes over the top...it's not that I don't care but a pair of knickers, any type will suffice... I don't wear bras so that rules the top half out of the equation....

  3. I'm with you, I'll mostly wear a colour the same bottom and top but they don't actually go together.

  4. To be honest I'm pretty much the same as you!! I don't match and generally don't purposely colour co-ordinate and I too love a bright bra! I've a red one and yellow one!

  5. as with makeup and houses, the foundation of an outfit is crucial to how it looks. however, whether it matters if it all matches is another problem - i mean, as often as i match black and black, i can't really think of anything less attractive than flesh and flesh...!

  6. I wear practical things. I used to have a bunch of matchy-matchy stuff, but it was too limiting, and very expensive. I wear a lot of white tops, and they require beige bras, so I have one that works well to opaquisize things. It's ugly. The pants that match it are ugly too. So I don't wear them. I have lots of thongs and boyshorts none of which match anything. I suppose I'm a smalls rebel.

  7. I ADORE THIS TOPIC.
Recently I went on a underwear shopping spree. I wanted to transform my collection Undergarments. I just feel like they are secretly a little something that can make a woman feel more beautiful or feminine I dont always feel like the colors need to always match per-say but I like to kind of wear pairs together just because it gives me alittle boost everyday. I think it just depends on the person.

  8. I agree that undergarments should fit well but matching? I don't think so!

  9. I'm not a matcher, although I tend to somehow coordinate my underwear to the t-shirt I'm wearing, not the bra. wow that was a weird confession. I used to wear a little 'wilder' undies, but now I go for comfort only, so generally bikini briefs in solids and fun prints.

  10. lol, I generally mix and match for the most part so I'll wear any color and kind of panties with a bra that works well under my top.

  11. I don't think I own any matching underwear.
Which makes me sound really... sloppy.

  12. I'm a bit of pull things out of a hat when it comes to pants and bras. Mix it up, who cares.

  14. I think a woman's undergarments speak volumes about her personal style. They don't necessarily have to "match" the outfit, but they are certainly a reflection of the gal wearing them. I am a huge fan of bespoke knickers like Kiki de M, etc. . . . Great Q!

  15. I would love to be able to say that I only wear custom made matching silk underwear but alas, I live in the real world. I make sure all my underwear is fabulous, but as for matching - no.

  16. whereas i don't feel like matching your bra and underwear makes you less fashionable or put together, i do think what you wear under your clothes makes a big impact. though they're not visible, i feel way more confident when i'm wearing a nice set!

  17. I don't see the point of matching sets. Yes, they look nice when your underwear is all you're wearing, but in my world, the undies have to match the 'outies'.

  18. I love matching stuff, but only of the silky/lacy/retro variety. Lingerie boutiques are dangerous places for me. I avoid anything cutesy/tomboyish. Beyond that, innumerable pairs of black cotton knickers, and the odd gorgeous bra that goes with nothing but is too beautiful not to wear on a regular basis. I don't wear white tops usually so have very few 'oh god it shows through' dilemmas.
