Exhibit inspires design
Miró, Calder, Giacometti, Braque: Aimé Maeght and His Artists is an outstanding exhibition at the Royal Academy until 4 January 2009. This article in The Independent gives more background information but nothing beats seeing it for yourself.
Art was a huge influence on Yves Saint Laurent and his collection was amassed over many years with Pierre Bergé. The influential cubist painting he so loved will be auctioned early next year.
Now if I were a fashion house designer I'd be hot footing it to the Maeght collection exhibit to inspire my next collection and when one does emerge you'll know it was my top tip!

You're ahead of the pack with this top tip, Kate! I wish I could see the exhibit. I love Miró and Braque.
ReplyDeleteHi there-what a massive collection art they had! Totally amazing stuff!
ReplyDeleteoh how i miss living abroad xfrancis
ReplyDeleteI can't begin to tell you the number of press releases I've read over the last year that have read 'so-and-so has been highly influenced by the cubist work of 'insert Russian artist'...but I trust you and if you say it's a 'must-see', then I'll have to stew that once again I miss out.
ReplyDeleteImelda Matt - ah my clumsy ref to YSL and cubism was to highlight the coming sale of his art collection and the face he did draw upon art for inspiration as well as everything else. This exhibition is not cubist, although there are no dounbt Braque is a founder of the cubist movement along with Picasso, although his other work is on display. Miro was a surrealist but more than anything was anti bourgeoisie and wanted to upset the establishment, Calder was into kinetic art and sculpture. Giacometti agian was a sculptor and experimented with cubism and surrealism - in the exhibition there are his beautiful oil on canvas which are not either cubism or surrealism.
ReplyDeleteAll of the artists experimented but they were extremely talented, formally trained and as for the Matisse on display well gorgeous is the only way I can describe his The Bush a work in ink and grouche on paper.
I will try and pop down if I have time. I didn't know about it. Thanks for the tip.
