When I fly today back to London (had to change flight from Heathrow to Gatwick due to argy bargy) I will be disappointed by the uniform. I long for the days of designs that said flirty and fashion. This BEA uniform was designed by John Cavanagh. Cavanagh was born in Ireland and ended up working for the couturier Edward Molyneaux before setting up his own fashion house. Whilst many a design house gets reborn with French and Italian heritage, the British ones seem to remain firmly in the past. Shame.

You are right the uniforms are nothing compared to how they used to be xx
ReplyDeleteAs far as I'm aware, contemporary UK fashion designers are still involved in the design of airline uniforms. I suppose practicality comes first these days... The Singapore Airlines girls still manage to look elegant.
ReplyDeleteThey looked so glamourous back then.SarahD

Agreed, why can't they all look glam like on the virging advert! However to check out some fab tongue in cheek airhostess outfits watch 'view from the top' with Gwyneth Paltrow and Mark Ruffalo!.x
ReplyDeleteLovely photos - we need more glamour in our lives!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the Golden Age of air hostess/flight attendant uniforms has faded away. It is a shame, I agree. The one attempt I saw at recent uniform redesign was lackluster at best. I can't remember the designer now. I think the colors were red, navy, and white. ZZZzzzzzz.
ReplyDeleteThe uniforms nowadays suck!
