Now I'm not going to pretend that I wasn't a tad jealous that recently fellow fashion bloggers got a preview of Anthropologie before it opened in Regents Street, London. A pale shade of green cast a shadow over my pale complexion.
And then the wonderful Mrs Fashion newly returned to the world of blogging suddenly beat a hasty retreat undone by then new demands of daily blogging, being first and the fact bloggers often get their own press days and info prior to the journalists. Mmmm.
Suddenly the world of blogging looks a bit different and in a sense one has to choose a side? And that side is probably being an insider or an outsider. I feel torn as someone who works within the fashion industry (in some small part) it is a choice between ego and principles. Do I attend to the ego and look to become part of the fashion blogging in crowd (who are all very nice) or do I keep to the principle of my fashion blogging - affordability, good style advice without bias or influence all with a nod to personal economic reality. Mmmm again.
Ah its easy I'd rather keep Mrs Fashion than sell out ...shame she's gone again. Pass the Anthropologie canapes...
What do you think inside or out?
AS a journalist I have always preferred being on the outside and looking in - you can see so much more.
ReplyDeleteI really cant comment as a total amateur but I am jealous too I am dying to see their products.
ReplyDeleteI love you just the way you are! But yes, this particular "in" thing would have been pretty good. I don´t read those "official" fashion blogs in any case, I really prefer your type.
ReplyDeleteI find the hyped, "official" fashion blogs extremely boring. Please keep doing what you're doing!
ReplyDeleteI think you should blog because you want to, whether you are on the inside or the outside, afterall I reckon there are very few fashion bloggers that get invited to these things don't you? Just the likes of Susie Lau who get invites to Chanel shows etc and although I love her blog, it is so not relevant to me. Personally I started mine because I didn't think many people my age were blogging about clothes unyet women in their forties are still passionate about fashion (well some of us!). xx There is a place for everyone and I am sad Mrs Fashion has gone off the radar again, I was always interested in her opinions which I thought were quite personal and not all fashion insiderish!
ReplyDeleteI think your blog is great - as is! You fill a niche that would be gone if you switched up your format. And I totally understand your green-eyed feelings - but if it makes you feel any better, I've always hated Anthropologie.
ReplyDeleteAnthropologie is not for me...but I read their catalogs like novels. I would put you firmly in the outsiders camp - because of your film side. A filmaker is an artist. With a point of view. It seems to me fashion insiders all drink the same Kool-Aid.
ReplyDeleteInside or out - it's best to remain impartial and objective and I think you do a very good job.
ReplyDeleteOoh its a tricky one, as I think some people can become insiders by mistake too, simply by being in the right place at the right time.
ReplyDeleteI think whatever makes you/"one" happy is the way to go....
I love your blog (as I'm sure you know) but it's also important still to say it! xxx
Bah I spit on Anthropology (ok I dont really) but I think you just have to follow your heart. I think even if you did get a few tasty invites you would still give us a good honest blog post, but hey if you had to make do with a few feebies I am sure you could cope ;-)
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that people are seen bloggers as an important tool to talk about fashion...we really are...
ReplyDeleteHmm, I think inside so long as you are writing about what you are genuinely interested in, and don't feel 'obliged' to post about something just because you think you should... Its good to share!
ReplyDelete(Yes I am LCF by the way - I actually remember you mentioned your dissertation topic in a lecture we had, funny how some things stick in your mind!)
You are an interesting blend of inside and out. I think you're just right, just the way you are.
ReplyDeleteI'm sad about Mrs. Fashion leaving blogging; she added insider stuff to the blogging world that nobody else was adding, even though she may not know it. I wish she'd stayed.
I love K Line for hating Anthro. I have a love hate thing with the place. But don't be jealous, there will be cooler things, I assure you.
ReplyDeleteI was disappointed by Mrs Fashion's re-departure...wasn't really sure I got her reason for it...
ReplyDeleteYes, yes, totally tricky. I've always straddled both sides as I'm a journalist/editor by day, and a blogger by night.
ReplyDeleteThe Anthro event was actually a press event, with a few bloggers as well. I wrote a DPS feature on it for my publication, and have worked closely with the Anthro team in the lead up to the launch. But it was also a very 'Wee Birdy' shop, so I covered it on my blog as well.
Funny thing is that I got an invitation to both my work address and my private Wee Birdy address. And I covered it for both publications!
The best bloggers always do their own thing and don't necessarily follow the crowd, which is what you do very well.
My approach to it is this - will my readers by interested in this piece? I've knocked back several freebies and a high-paying bingo advertiser in a bid to stay true to what my blog is all about.
So yeah - stay true to 'Make do Style' and do your own thing! xx
I am obviously an outsider, but when I get invited to things I like to pretend to be an insider and stuff my face with canapes! This lasts about 5 minutes of course, and then i'm back to being my normal geeky outsider self!!
ReplyDeleteBeing an out outsider I'm so far away those invitacions, but I like to think that bloggers are being listen.
ReplyDeleteSo I agree with Enc when she says "You are an interesting blend of inside and out. I think you're just right, just the way you are."
Keep your good work, my dear, stay true to yourself.
xoxo
I think blogs tend to suffer and mundane once the bloggers get "sucked in," as it were. I've all but stopped reading the "Biggies." I'm sure you know who I mean... I like the smaller ones, as the authors tend to write from the heart and not the coin purse. Always love Kingdom of Style, though :)
