Jane Russell - what a beauty
It was really sad to wake up to the news of Jane Russell's death as she was one of my favourite actresses and it was her and Marilyn Monroe who formed part of my MA dissertation on the red dress thanks to their stellar performance in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953). If you haven't seen it then make sure you do. Jane Russell is wonderful and delivers great gags and comic timing, as does Marilyn. The pair are fabulous together.
The death of Jane Russell really is an end of an era when it comes to 1940s stars. Her Hollywood career ended at the end of the 1950s. She was a real bombshell!

Did you see her on the Rankin/BBC photography show? What a gal she sure intimidated him but in a good way
ReplyDeleteA true natural beauty and screen goddess, she was stunning!
ReplyDeleteHear, hear. RIP Jane Russell. xx
ReplyDeleteShe was fabulous - a real smart and sexy woman amidst a ton of underestimated women.
ReplyDeleteClass act - what a star! And I am still in shock about the Galliano affair, it's all very sad.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen many of her films but it's always so sad whenever one of the Hollywood greats dies. There just isn't the same glamour around any more.
ReplyDeleteDear Kate, wasn't she gorgeous. It's always sad to hear another one of those stars has gone.
ReplyDeleteThose red sequinned dresses are amazing, I must watch GPB again as per usual I have no recollection xx
Apparently she never wore THAT bra, but wore her own instead.
ReplyDeleteShe was the perfect foil for dippy Marilyn!

Apart from the trashiness of today's "superstars" they all lack what Jane Russell had in spades: star quality. Last Sunday, at the Oscars, most of those ladies looked like some Mary Smiths who had just washed their hair but didn't have time to blow dry. All of them are interchangeable. Jane Russell was unique. RIP
