Back fat facts! Biting the bullet..

I've had an interesting day mainly to do with breasts. It seems that breasts are upper most in my thoughts and deeds.

It is just I read through the comments of Bra-Gate and the lovely Pearl of Fashion Pearls of Wisdom made me laugh so much with her comment, this bit specifically:

'But what I hate even more than no bra is too tight across the back bra- its like back muffin tops all over. I had this debate last time I went for a bra fitting the woman insisted the correct size was the one giving me back rolls - I said look love I dont care what you think is a correct fit but this looks ridiculous, and got the size bigger.'

Did you know that once you've had the right bra fitted, your back works better and the muscles and cells in your back will adjust. This mean the rolls of fat will go. Firstly the muscle works better so by working it your posture improves and this helps the rolls to go because you're not standing so badly. Then the bra stretches so after a while at the back it isn't so firm and starts sitting away from the body. This is why bra's only really last for six months!

My advice is go with the correctly fitted bra, suck it up ref back fat and it will sort itself out quite quickly!

But if you are very worried then swimming or rowing as a cardio exercise will help and specific weight training exercises can improve back posture and therefore the distribution of fat.

And no I'm not going to show any images of back fat as we are too harsh on ourselves as it is!!

Also different brands of bras suit different body shapes or breast shapes and if you are a 30" back in one you might be a 32" in another - always get fitted properly. My favourite place is Selfridges but around the country there are great independent lingerie specialist, Rigby & Pellar, Bravissimo and John Lewis or Debenhams. Don't go to M&S - worse bra fitters in land (sorry but true)

I don't have a favourite bra make as the products change all the time although I keep meaning to get a bullet bra from What Katie Did. My favourite bra colour is fuchsia pink! What is yours?

  1. Noooooo Kate, I don't agree!!! There is such a thing as a too tight bra, it looks awful. I am now tempted to send you photos of me in my underware. My bra fits perfectly, supportive and yet no back fat. I always make sure they fasten on the first hook so I can tighten it when it gives a bit. But there is no way the right fitting bra is the one that is so tight it gives you back fat!!! Damn why wasn't I a blogger back them, then I would have photographic proof! I should also mention at the time I was a size 6 so there was not an inch of fat on my body until I put that bra on, and it was cutting off my circulation! Burn all the bras!!! I am also going to refer to you as booby-lady from now on ;-)

  2. If if is cutting off your circulation then that is a different matter!! But I do find back fat appears on all and sundry regardless of dress size until it settles - would have loved photographic proof!

What it does suggest is you needed a better fit at the front - if the bra isn't a good fit for the ribcage and the breast tissue then back fat is heightened as it is pulling skin and fat from all places!!

I'm checking you bra next time we meet
    love booby lady xx

  4. I recently had a bra fitting and tried on a bunch of bras before finding one I like. The lovely sales associate assured me that *everyone* has back fat and but that it's rarely visible under clothing if one is standing up straight. I don't go snug in the band to the point of discomfort, but snug enough for fit and to take some of the pressure off the shoulders.

  6. Hi there!! As a flat chested gal, I recently discovered that by going down from a 34a to 32a, I now have cleavage, plus a very tight bra-so I only wear the smaller size bra for va voom occasions!!

  10. Miss Rayne - yes they are old school measuring & bra specifications so usually you need to go up back sizes and down cup sizes. I intend to go and get fitted by them.

  12. Honey - I'm totally with you. Everyone's wearing their bras too loose. And back fat isn't nearly as much of an issue as boobs that sag. The posture afforded by the right bra does mitigate any worries about too much flesh.

  16. I'm just catching up on my blogs and had a giggle at Bra-gate! There is no excuse for a badly-fitting bra, it can knock much-needed pounds off us ladies. I love the Harlow bullet bra, its lovely! xx

  17. I think you are right about M&S I am having big problems with their bras lately.

  18. Ooh great posts ladies - it's a real problem that the fitters in Bravissimo etc just don't get - and by the way if you buy one of those harnesses it is impossible to wear them all day, and undoing your bra to watch TV is a very "old lady" thing to do! I favour Elle Macpherson because they fit me so well, hold me up and are comfortable and not bad on the glamour front. I love Agent Provocateur but the sizing is always odd - definitely bedroom wear.
