Where to spend it

I'm often bemused and amused in equal measures by the FT's How to Spend it magazine. The most recent was an outstanding issue with gorgeous dresses made of wallpaper made especially for the home and garden edition it was. The amount items cost in How to Spend it are huge bucks.

Actually it was the wallpapers, nothing under £43 per roll (although £43 was cheapest price I've ever seen in the mag) which made me think about where to spend ones money. I'm always thinking about the how and why of where to buy clothes and is a good reason etc. It is one of my obsessions. Recently I reverted back to my age old mantra of buy quality for shoes, jewellery and bags, knits, t-shirts and trousers and everything else doesn't matter.

My reasoning is thus, these items need to be of quality to look good with ease. For some reason trousers only truly last and work well if they are cut well. And good cuts cost. I'd rather buy one really good white t-shirt than lots of substandard ones. I'm only likely to wear it once a week if that, so better to spend more for something that lasts longer. You don't have to go bonkers the Isabella Oliver 365 Perfect Tee for £35 is fantastic quality and a perfectly respectable nonchalant cut.

The same is true of shoes. I bought a pair of Tods loafers in Rome nearly 5 years ago and they are still going strong.

I think where you spend your money is a better choice to making things last. The amount of money I wasted on tat, or quantity of goods, means I could have easily had a 2.55 Chanel bag ages ago and the same is true of my now curbed high st costume jewellery splurges. Why I could have had this instead! A wonderful unusual - not worn by Alexa Chung (although I'm sure WendyB would be happy if she did) - Tortoise locket ($2,800.00)

It could be all a case of growing up or being wiser but if I have spare coffers again then I know I will wait to spend it where I will get the best returns and greatest pleasure.

  1. I've got dodgy feet so I do spend a bit more on shoes - everything else is a mixture of high street and mid-range labels with the odd designer sale bargain thrown in!

  2. Well said! And that necklace is a beauty!

  3. Agree! Though I'm also coming around to the fact that high quality goods come in mid-range price points too. Sometimes the only difference between a $150 pair of shoes and a $500 pair of shoes is the designer name. (Though I do plan to try on some Tods when we hit Italy next month!)

  4. Yes, completely agree with your thoughts, we must be getting older and wiser, although what about the "you can't take it with you" school of thought? I have recently decided that I was only going to spend on something if I really loved it, not just because it was a bargain. On the subject of wallpaper at £43 a roll I did a post http://jopwales.blogspot.com/2010/10/wallpaper-to-take-out-second-mortgage.html#links which is worth a look at - hmm wonder if it is in the sale yet?

  5. Totally agree (like everyone here, it seems). I can't have everything--not even close--so I'm carefully resisting a lot of spendy things right now so I can grab a specific item from Hermes in a few months. So far, replenishing my spring wardrobe has meant mainly inexpensive purchases, although I broke down and ordered a pair of Church's brogues. I'm hoping they fit! I need one amazing pair of closed shoes that will last forever. I'm hoping these are the ones--and I'm willing to pay for it.

  6. You are so right, I firmly believe the less is more mantra. Some of my Ferragamo shoes are over 12 years old, but I find when I decide to economize and buy from somewhere like Russell and Bromley, they are (a)not that much cheaper and (b) only last a year. Hermes is always a good investment I saw a second hand scarf in a local (breton) shop for 160 Euro! As for £43 wallpaper, aren't white walls far more chic!

  7. Oh, so nice of you to mention my tortoise!

And coincidentally, I'm writing a post about spending on high-quality things when it comes to business. You'll see ;-)

  8. You know, I think even I would wear t-shirts if I could find the right cut. I just wish I could find some with a silky weight and sleeves to my elbows - hate showing my upper arms. I saw a fab one in New Look - in cobalt or in orange - but the sleeves were a no no. Been wearing silk shirts to tide me over...

  9. Shoes for me, are a major splurge. My feet complain otherwise.
