It's that time of year again and I'm in need of a satchel or bag for my books and papers. Queen Michelle of Kingdom of Style bagged a vintage satchel a few weeks ago for £4. Now I've been hunting but no joy to date.
I've sourced a few options one is rather masculine satchel from Amazon at £70.99, which then made me think about popping to Ted Baker to look at their boys selection of bags. But then do I want to spend much at all - which makes H&M look the best price option with their cheapie £15 holdalls.
Do I opt for the prof look and buy a leather item or do I really make do with a lesser number?
I need your views and suggestions!
I vote make do for now, and keep looking out for a vintage one. The leather bag in the photo looks rather more briefcase than satchel (which surely you wish to avoid), and new satchels in general are a bit naff. I almost bought an old schoolboy satchel on Saturday (garage sale $10) but the pen marks on it were too much of a giveaway that its last owner was a pimply youth!
ReplyDeleteI'd try find a good one in sale first or maybe look in TKmax.
ReplyDeleteWell I'd say it depends on how long you intend to use it... If you think you'll be changing it next year, don't spend too much in it, but if you want something to keep for a few seasons, leather is definitely your option!
ReplyDeleteI love this bag's texture!
ReplyDeleteSkye - I agree it does look like a briefcase but all the satchels don't have a handle as well. I want to avoid sloping shoulders.
ReplyDeleteCoco - I will be making my way to TK Maxx!
Aliena - you are getting right to it, I might change my mind after a term at LCF.
Stephie - I'm a sucker for soft dark leather and the men's bags do this so well.
I need a bag for the school too, and that it's perfect.
ReplyDeleteHi kate-maybe make do with a canvas/material style bag for now, but thrift vigiliantly for a leather satchel-have you checked out ebay for vintage and new ones too?
ReplyDeleteI'd go with eBay too...a new one just seems wrong when old weathered ones are out there for far less!
ReplyDeleteEveryone makes good points, and you could hit the jackpot thrifting, but if you don't and your make-do bag wears out or gets boring, you'll be frustrated. I actually really love the satchel pictured, as I'm a fan of exterior pockets. Organization is key! I'd go for it. But then, I kinda love being contrarian.
ReplyDeleteI'd say it depends on how long you want it to last. If you want to get something that you won't have to replace for ten years, spend some money on classic quality. If you want to change bags each year with the trends, or on a whim, you can spend a lot less for something quirky and distinctive.
ReplyDeleteI always vote for classic quality, but I'm not much of a risk-taker.
The bag you've pictured is really nice, and the masculine aspect could be toned down by whatever you were wearing. You have nice taste.
Have found a few to watch on ebay which kind of works with what Sharon Rose and Susie recommend. They are all very nice and pretty reasonable
ReplyDeleteSal & Enc - both of you would lead me astray!
ReplyDeleteThere's lots of vintage satchel bags at Portobello Market...go this weekend and have a browse...there's some nice ones ^_^
ReplyDeletenothing leather too heavy with bookds in it.
ReplyDeleteI just have to chime in again to say I have sent you a little tag on my blog!
ReplyDeleteI love the bag in the picture. About 10 years ago I bought a make-do satchel bag, in black leather and I still use it today, they are incredibly useful items. Go for what pleases you the most.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there's got to be something promising on eBay!
ReplyDeleteI think $15 for school bag is the right amount to spend, should eBay fail to deliver try etsy.
