Thought for the week - would you buy a £150 River Island dress?

I have no image for this post. I have no link to specific item on River Island's web page but I did find a £99 prom dress. For some reason River Island is all flash and I being non tech whizz cannot grab the image or link it.

The Sunday Times's Style magazine this weekend listed on page 26 list a £150 River Island dress. I'm quite shocked. I think of River Island as a retailer offering £39.99 dresses and perhaps the high end being £69.99.

Sorry but £150 - who's buying and why? Why is it £150? River Island please explain...

If you were expecting a high brow debate, sorry I exhausted myself in one yesterday.

  1. Simple answer.. no I wouldn't as i know it probably wouldn't be good quality or stand the test of time. x

  2. Me neither! The younger generation who shop in there, as my daughters do, wouldn't be able to afford it.

  3. We don't get River Island in Australia but I am assuming it is a sort of low rent chainstore style brand? I hate it when formerly cheap brands decide to up their prices but I also feel uneasy and sad when I buy some el cheapo item that I know someone has been paid $2 to make by working a 16 hour day in a sweat shop in India or China in appalling conditions. This is the problem with cheap "disposable" fashion and something I struggle with as I do love a bargain. Sweat Shops are the Devil's Work. What are your thoughts Make Do?

  4. Hi there-I'd say a no, I'd rather be spending that amount towards a piece of jewellery or a vintage designer bag!

  5. I'm feeling your pain. Here in Australia, about 7 years ago I used to be able to get a whole outfit from the likes of Sportsgirl for AUD100. Now they charge AUD200+ for a dress... AUD300 for a jacket etc

    Blimey

  6. Faux Fuschia - I don't want to deny workers their pay and cheap disposable garments are questionable but the whole thing is so complex, I'll do a post on it! And yes River Island is a high street cheapy. I really don't get the idea of a £150 dress in a RI store.
    I want them to explain!

  7. I wouldn't buy it. I can't believe it would be high enough quality or style to warrant it... But perhaps I should see it before I pass judgement! Although that wouldn't be so much fun :)

  8. Went to look on their website, that one for £100 barely has any material, let alone being anywhere near nice. Original opinion confirmed!

  9. Marie - I know it is hideous! I keep wondering if it is an ethical number but there's no saying so.

  10. I'm always quite surprised by how expensive River Island actually is. And as my daughter says, dragging me away frome the windows: Why would you buy at River Island if you can go to topshop?

  12. Haha I spotted that very dress yesterday. And my reaction went like this 'oooh nice dress, how much? £150 and it's river island? no thanks!'

For £150 you can get something from a diffusion line that is going to be better made than River Island's pieces.

Also good luck with your result, it's this week, right?
