It is autumn. Think green. Think cosy and walks kicking leaves. Then you need this in your life.

High St Pick of the Week
Betwixt and between is the sum total of our wardrobe experience at the moment. The idea of skimpy summer clothes seems unimaginable as downpours, cool winds and meagre sunshine are the current order of the day. Retailers have been suffering with appalling April monthly figures due to the weather. Normally you would be inspired or carried away in the heat of the moment, sunshine gives people hope and you would be happy to add a few summer pieces to your wardrobe as part of the longer days and warmer months.
When it is like this, forget fashion as a trend moment and look to build some useful additions that have longevity. Basics, layering items or anything useful that you feel is missing from your wardrobe that can pull looks together.
The cardigan is one such item that falls into the exceedingly useful bracket. It's versatility lies in its ability to be worn as a layer of warmth which can easily be put on or taken off. To act as a jacket or cape. Add a skinny belt over an open v neck cardigan and it has more structure and formality. Wear a cardigan over your shoulders and it says 'nonchalant' in many ways. It can when buttoned up pose as jumper and when only half buttoned up it is exploring it's options as a style item. A crew neck, a boyfriend and a v-neck is all you need.
To add variety a Breton style cardigan can add the X Factor to an outfit. A step away from the traditional top or jumper, it is to be enjoyed for work or weekend. Isabella Oliver 365 Collection are a good stop for quality and cut so your cardigan has legs in years of wear.

I'm ruined
What with the indomitable and wonderful Mary Portas with Channel 4's Secret Shopper (9pm Wednesday's) and my style challenge, (yes I know I fell off the wagon but more of that in another post) suddenly the high street is ruined for me.
Yesterday after my interview for an arts magazine, full of joie de vivre as the French say or hwyl as we Welsh say, I plunged into first John Lewis (mainly to use their toliets) and then Zara. Now I can't knock John Lewis on their service, though occasionally it borders in to arrogance or patronising, but they can never seem to get their fashion buying really spot on. It is better and the layout in Oxford St is 100 times better than before but the sight of all those clothes still depressed me and the shoe area seems to have gone backwards in its stock. But I love their tights section and other accessories downstairs and the rest of their store but the fashion bit leaves me cold and stressed!
When Sharon and I went mental in Knightsbridge, okay maybe only I did, I saw a lovely polka dot top in Zara but I'd already blown the budget. I thought I thought I would return and try it on. Of course I picked up some other items to try as well. The whole experience was hideous. In part, my body shape is changing as I get older so I can't blame the sizing issue on Zara but the cuts differ wildly so you never know what to go for. You are only allowed six items to take in (I had 9) and they can't hold them for you so you can swap them in and out. I managed to change very quickly , put things on and swap over to the items on the rail ready to go back into the shop. This is where they put your items so if the person clearing up the rail is swift and organised you are stuffed. In short the other items were ill fitting, poor quality and the polka top was ok.
I then had to queue for ages as they only had two people on the five tills and both were dealing with returns/exchange stuff. Not a word of apology, no eye contact, talking to colleague and so I refused a Zara bag and put the top in my own bag.
I realised that I can not be bothered to go through that again. I've had it with high street shopping. I admit I'm used to shopping for my clients in Selfridges, Harrods, Harvey Nicks, Bond St and Browns but most of their items are out of my price range, although where they are not I will choose to shop their first and the lovely Fenwicks. I get my designer fixes from TK Maxx (where I expect nothing ref customer serivce and they are always really nice) and the Outnet.
Which is why online shopping is a better fit and more fun. No hassle other than returns and companies like ASOS make this a doodle now. And especially when you can get what you want - behold my £12 ASOS turban!!

I love it!! Excuse the poor photo taking with my iphone. I truly need a photographer at my beck and call. Although I'm dreading seeing yesterday's photo shoot of me.
My other delivery was a rug which I'd ordered with some Christmas vouchers I was given. It is so soft and fluffy the petit garcon is in rug heaven, he declared the arrival of the rug 'really exciting' and has been found on it every since!

And I'm ruining my little boy with fab ice lollies!

High Street Pick of the Week
A last minute present, or life saver is on offer this week. I would like to give you sequins, fun and laughter but it appears it is batten down the hatches, stoke up the fires and hope the blizzard misses you.
If you've already got the wellies to cope with our snow that quickly turns to slush, but need the warmth then your best bet is a pair of Hunter's socks for inside your wellies to keep toes warm.
My insiders tip is a good old ebay seller Country Attire, after all ebay is practically high street these days. Of course the downside is the fact the snow plus Christmas will preclude a swift delivery but you plan ahead for future cold times or country walks.
I'm fully appreciative that welly socks are hardly the most exciting wardrobe item but due to snow I would have to say this is the one December I've not even bothered to peep in store. I nipped into Harrods for some last minute items and a Chanel nail polish on Thursday but that is it.
Update the 12 noon scenes around me 14 miles south of Central London to give it some perspective. You'll note how handy welly socks are and I did get mine from Country Attire on eBay. The picture quality is pants as it is my 3 year old blackberry which I must upgrade!

You can tell it was a blizzard due to how the snow has covered the tree trunks

Something I threw on...
..for Christmas day. You know the score, effort, things to do, want to keep warm, feel fat from office or friends mince pies and those damn Christmas drinks events plus you've got more food to eat. Suddenly that lovely Chrimbo dress, skirt or trousers are looking worryingly wrong. Never fear, put on trusty old comfy skirt/jeans or trousers and add this jumper for max effect. Brush your hair add some lippy and voila - turkey anyone?

Make it black and white
I love a Christmas tree theme and when Next sent me some twelve days of Christmas images I felt inspired and some of my churlish, bored of cold, not doing Christmas pout began to melt.

I've been inspired to do a black and white theme now this year. I was toying with gold and white but the French Hen above swung it for me with the oh so cute beret. And when I found these gorgeous glittery stags on the Next website the deal was sealed. Now all I have to do is get the tree...

High Street Pick of the Week
From now until Christmas the shops are rammed with temptation particularly of the clothing variety. The matter of fact approach is to buy cheap when it comes to clothes as you have so many priorities to fulfil especially parties, work drinks and presents. Also unless you are going out with the same people one outfit should see you through your engagements.
Not really a high st offering but these days the internet is your living room substitute and brings many options to remote places. I've picked a my987wardrobe.com dress which has a wow factor for the festive rounds and most definitely won't break the bank - phew!

High Street Pick of the Week
Well more internet pick of the week but then isn't the super highway the new high street anyway. Back in November I went to the my-wardrobe Spring Summer press evening and fell in love with this Manoush dress.
It really is a pretty dress and beautifully constructed, well worth a splurge to wear again and again during the summer months.

High Street Pick of the Week - Christmas gift ideas

I don't mean to encourage anyone to drink but I can't recommend the wonderful writing on wines and other drink by Victoria Moore, enough. After many years of reading and trying her recommendations - she has a column every Saturday in the Guardian Weekend, I can vouch and attest for her wonderful palette. Her £8.99 book available from Toast is a worthy contender for a Christmas gift. Not fashion but hey what's fashion without the occasional tipple.

High Street Pick of the Week - Christmas gift ideas
In the run up to Christmas, I'll select potential gifts for friends and family from the high street or where necessary the internet too.
I'm starting with my favourite internet site for t-shirts for the man in your life, brother, dad etc.
The Shot Dead in the Head site possibly has some of the funniest t-shirts around but in good designs and very good quality cotton without costing a fortune. This is the key, t-shirts are rubbish unless well executed. Plus t-shirts are great for guys they need them for the weekend!
Whatever they are into then there is a tee for them. The football stand t- shirt collections are a subtle way of advertising your team without resorting to a replica top!
They've just introduce The Wire to the tv and film section.

Bad Taste Pick of the Week
One of my secret indulgences is a website called Shot Dead in the Head. Please, if you suffer with any slightly disapproving tendencies about taste or as Bourdieu would have defined taste or our social conditioning - habitus, then desist from reading this immediately.
I find them (Shot Dead etc.) very handy for presents for the men in my life. Many years ago my sisters, friends and I referred to my father as DIY Bri. He was forever giving us all handy tips and popping round in workman's overalls to fix things. The helpfulness was undermined by his tendency to explain his undertaking and methodology in detail. Eventually the shouts of 'where's your flip chart' from across the pub by local yobs and the rolling of eyes by everyone else contained his sharing. We got him a t-shirt with his nickname on, in fact sadly we still buy him ridiculous motif style presents like mugs and other stuff, on the basis that it is amusing for 5 minutes.
The original t-shirt incident started a trend of buying poor blokes jokey tees for presents (well it's not my fault they don't have net-a-porter et al wish lists!). Some are witty or clever design takes on their favourite football team. Mr MDS happily sports this one...
My brother-in-law gets this for his birthday next week...

And Mr MDS won't let me wear this one....

Anyway I went too far tonight and discovered a really rubbish make your own t-shirt site and came up with this.... it's a bit small but says 'I survived swine flu'.

And then I realised it was time to get a grip and this is what happens when I haven't had time due to swine flu to do my normal high street pick of the week as I haven't been looking....

What's not to like about ASOS. Firstly it is egalitarian, it doesn't matter what you budget is you can find a nifty item and it easy to search on colour, price, brand or style. And now it offers designer brands that aren't as heady in price as some internet shops. ASOS's designer offering was launched on February 20th and is adding new items daily.

High Street pick of the week
Technically this is not a high street offering as Boden mainly operates as a catalogue/internet shopping business. As I always say they are hardly cutting edge or luxe but you can always find a quiet useful number amongst the shout!
And I'm telling you if I don't get a thank you from the Boden PR for once this'll be the last time! Enough of my feuding...
I thought this piece would add to any wardrobe and be a key spring summer piece. I like the metallic detail and a summer jumper always comes in handy for the UK! Ignore the smug middle class aspect of the image and think how to work it!

Rambling continued...
Yesterday I mentioned that blogging had changed my life. Which, on the face of it sounds like an epiphany of mega proportions that I'm obliged to follow it up with revealing I'm off to Eastern Congo as a missionary. But of course I'm not!
The world of blogging is a funny old thing on the one hand we have the return of Liberty London Girl and a number of exits stage left such as Je Ne Sais Quoi, a holding pad with Observationmode (possible return?) and a gone gone gone with Mrs Fashion. Blogging is still small fry in the UK compared to the USA and it is no surprise the three I mention are stateside.
Attending the talk with Susie of Style Bubble seemed a bit surreal after having read her blog for 18 months, having done a blogosphere interview with her and then to be sat there in a room with other people listening to her discussing blogging and her passion for it. Susie truly is an A+++ blogger (sorry lazy ebay speak!) and has plans for her blog. Moi, I am a mere amateur. When I started last January I did it as an outlet for my writing, the inner journalist (I was one once!) who was creative and opinionated. I didn't find my styling work demanding, as working part time with a young child limits the effort you can put in, and therefore the work you get to do.
So, I had a blogosphere chat with Mrs Fashion (all my sleuthing and cajoling didn't result in a revelation) on a couple of courses I was considering and went with my heart's desire, my MA in Fashion and Film. Since, I am nothing but always honest, I choose it thinking I was going to up my game on styling and work on films as costume designer or wardrobe supervisor - along those lines anyway; plus maybe a few published articles here and there...
Nothing prepared me for a) absolutely loving being a student again and this time a studious studying one not the social butterfly I was last time around! And b) realising that my writing and visual executions (plus my photographic memory which relates only to images, I store light and scenes in my head - I can evoke a place and a face anytime. Names, things to do - forget it! I have to take a list with me and even then I miss things off) meant I knew I wanted to create and direct films. I have a vague memory of wanting to do this before, I think that is why I went into advertising when I left university but I was too much of a sensitive soul to stay. I can't watch Mad Men as it reminds me too much of my bastard creative director! I learnt photography and film techniques and copy writing but it wasn't enough to keep me hooked into the world I was desperate to leave.
It took me years even to step foot in Soho Square again and I did it by accident in last November as I walked from Central St Martins in Charing Cross to LCF at John Princes St off Oxford Street. It was weird walking there and now I'm ready for the industry - mainly because my confidence now controls my humility and I'm no longer in awe. You see I told you this was a ramble. It is just weird when you realise what you want to do and as a realist, I know I might just spend the rest of my life scrabbling money together to only make hi res video shorts, but at least I'll be doing what I want.
Styling, fashion stuff all seems a dim distant memory. It's dreadful but I'm just going through the motions regarding styling work at the moment, I feel a teeny tiny bit guilty and I need to fess up soon to my contractual work. I still absolutely love the fashion industry and fashion itself but I've taken a step out and feel like I'm peeking in at it. None of this would have happened if I hadn't started my own blog, it is like a stream of consciousness for me and I admire the focus of other blogs who have a defined remit and deliver against that because I've become such a rambler!!
My question is to you the blogosphere (truly it is the new answer to clairvoyance and consulting ones horoscope) do I continue to execute posts per se as I've been doing? Or do I really up the ante on make do style stuff - more recessionista (yukky word)? Or shall I raise my Fashion and Film blog to the fore and be an informative soul? What do you like to read and why?
If I was a rich girl I wouldn't be using my computer to post a blog, I'd be online buying these!

Blue but on budget
Now if you are one step up on me and have a few spare pennies but would prefer not to blow the budget then there are new items online on Pret a Portobello the thrifty and quirky girl's answer to internet shopping. This Tobi and Nabi Ink blue smock top/dress will keep your leggings working for a few more months and give the comfort of something new and versatile without breaking the bank at £49.00.Added PS! Also blue is a great choice for today with the inauguration of the first black, African/American President of the Unites States. I wish I was there for such a momentous occasion, I wish I wasn't working so I could be a voyeur for hours upon hours via the TV, and listen to every interview, comment and speech given. I'm wearing some Democrat blue today to be part of it all in spirit.

If there was one outfit I could buy this month
I wish I could be employed as a wit! Yes that is wit not twit or nitwit.
Some days I make myself laugh and that's just with my outfits. It was so cold last Monday (5th) that I added ear muffs to my layered stuff. As I descended the escalator from Waterloo station to the Northern line, two heavily armed police officers were stood at the bottom. One started to smirk as I neared the bottom so I immediately quipped:
Ear muffs are not a crime!
Thankfully, they both cracked up as being arrested wasn't top of my list that morning. My husband is never amused by my at large stand up comedy, but he does like my ear muffs. I think this is based on some Britney Spears fantasy, so, on that basis I heartily recommend to married and single girls alike, this skirt - its a winner on all fronts. I'd be buying it pronto if I could! Those two officers wouldn't be laughing at my descent in this.

Well it's my own fault...
I suppose the mere whiff of the word slow fashion tends to take some souls along a certain track so it is no wonder I've been bombarded with all manner of emails regarding items to be considered. Now far be it for me to be dismissive I do think the fact something isn't high fashion or fashion of the moment, doesn't mean it is good or stylish or that it is to every ones taste and more importantly as writer of this blog - my taste.
When I received an email and question from Radici - whether I thought their handmade snow scarf would make the grade i.e. is it worthy slow fashion item, I thought no! It doesn't make my personal choice grade. Not least because of the design. Let's be clear it is the design, the cut and the use of cloth that gives an item a certain cache to have design value. But of course I couldn't resist a snoop and thought actually the website has some interesting items that will appeal to some. The scarf comes in white, grey black and a almost YSL use of colour for the red/pink/orange number - at £140 it is hardly a make do item or Etsy prices but if you shop at Per Una then I suggest you go back to basics, wear white tee and jeans and add drama with a scarf like this instead.

Oh go on!
Now you'll know I'm not a big fan of Boden and really Johnny I know you don't give a fig for my views but you need to sort out your sizing and cuts. I also think their catalogue needs an edgier feel but hey ho Johnny is doing alright (currently) and am much as I love a top designer in my alter bank balance world I'm giving you a top tip for the perfect going out coat to see you through many an evening for the next few years. Go on call it investment dressing why not! Seriously this Bright Lights Coat (yeah no gagging over the name) is a winner - it says chic, understated but still keeping up standards despite the c word (that's credit crunch, if only I was Sister Wolf it would mean a whole lot more!) and more importantly won't break the bank.
At £95 its not a steal but it does beat a few others I could name. There's no drama with this coat but it is versatile, you could even wear it as a dress with a statement belt! Three great colours to choose from, black, magenta or marine, I can't believe it's Boden!
