Feeding the mind

Bizarrely due to my hectic schedule I haven't had a moment to indulge my default behaviour, fantasy clothes purchases, internet browsing a la Net-a-Porter, fantasy suitcase packing, extensive reading and re reading of magazines plus countless blogosphere moments.

The result of being occupied in an academic zone is I couldn't careless what I'm wearing and actually have become more creative. The couldn't careless factor is my previous always on trend or being ahead type fixation. My slow fashion view is because I woke up and smelt the coffee. In fairness there is nothing worse than a preachy convert and I'm not out to convert a nation so you won't find me on a soap box any where soon. Also I don't think I had this thought alone, collective rebellion is more powerful than the individual. If I was rich and it didn't affect me financially would I be rebelling and thinking enough is enough, probably not but I'd be swayed eventually by a stream of change that is slowly evolving around us.

It's just my head is filled with shall I write an essay on Jean Paul Gaultier's film costumes or just do one on La dolce vita for my film and costume unit? How will I write an essay on comparing Truffaut and Luc Besson examining the autuer theory? How can I make a short film as part of my dissertation project?

Enough about the high brow me and back to the low brow stuff - gossip. I was going to give you the high brow definition of a film star as opposed to a celebrity so you could lead the way on dinner party discussions, instead I give you Tom Ford is an ass low brow story instead.

Tom Ford was invite to give a talk at the London College of Fashion, he insisted on certain things. In fact he insisted on quite a lot so much so that he overlooked one small detail in his perfect posing for camera (the talk was being filmed) his forehead was a bit shiny but he'd peed the LCF staff off so much during his chest hair arrangement that neither they or the make up artist bothered to address the shine. Anyway a rather narcissistic interview (by all accounts)conducted by Colin McDowell ensued. At the end students were able to ask questions. Now a rather brilliant but quite introverted young female student plucked up courage to ask him did he have any tips for any up and coming designers, to which he replied 'Oh honey go and out and have lots of sex you'll never be as young and beautiful again.' Enter tumbleweed stage right.

  1. I agree. Ford is an arse. However, I've got to say, that was good (if flippant) advice he gave the young student. She should probably get out more. I think it's an essential part of being a student to properly take in life not just rot behind the academics. Wilde was right: Youth is wasted on the young. Okay, sermon over.

  2. Oh Tom Ford. So lame and Patchouli scented. I say do the Gaultier essay, that is if you can stand the Peter Greenaway factor. Yipes. Still, if you could get hold of the Les Liasons Dangereuses TV series, it would probably be quite interesting.

Oh, and I'm one of the vast army who's going to the Absolut party thingame. I'll probably see you there!

    Becky.

  4. That Tom Ford! Honestly, he's a one trick pony - not that I didn't love him in 1999. Great story.

  5. Ah Tom Ford, kind of hot, but he does not look friendly.
    Funny story.

  6. Leading a quiet rebellion - soapbox free - is likely to be an extremely effective route for Slow Fash Pack Move, I'd wager.

And holy hell, I'd like to DECK Ford for being such a disrespectful ass.

  7. After living in Austin, Texas and learning that is where Tom Ford is from I have to say that I see his persona as funny. I don't think he would like that. I think he takes himself pretty seriously. But, I like funny.

Oh, and I love the highbrow stuff to. Please post each and every paper you write. Or at least email them to me.;-)

  8. I loved Tom Ford - he had his moment in terms of design and my fav sunnies are my Tom Ford ones. I gave the gos because soemtimes people who can inspire think they are drol and hurt others. I'm all for the wit but not at the expense of others ref Anya Hindmarch post by Wendy B

  11. Hi there-its so funny, but as its drawing to the end of the year, I too have been reflecting on my fashion purchases throughout the year. Gazing through my wardrobe at all the lovely dresses I have, is currently making me feel perplexed. I'm swaying as to selling some of my stuff, as I think I'm really a jeans or leggings and jacket girl or vintage dresses in summer. Do I need a designer clothes collection-I really don't know? but I don't want to be too hasty.I do know I've had enough of clothes shopping for the forseeable! thank goodness its Xmas and presents for the kids are priority now and also I've no money to spend on clothes anyhow!! Sorry for the rant!

  12. Sharon Rose - your rant is brilliant. I think keep the dresses and wear them to go out in the evening and special events but make sure you are wearing them often and then rock the everyday way with your other clothes. You have a fab wardrobe and you don't need anymore - just get to use them. Christmas is coming and it is quite an outlay despite all best intentions.
I had to laugh today as I thought actually I could shorten that LK Bennett cocktail dress and cut the straps off and voila but now someone has bid for it!!

I tell you what if you ever want to sell me the Topshop one....

  13. Hi Kate-Thanks so much for your input, I'm in the middle of doing a post on this very subject and yours is an opinion I rate very highly. I think you've hit the nail on the head in that I don't need anymore-maybe thats key here. Pleased someones bid on your dress, I'm sure you also have some lovelies lurking in the wardrobe somewhere too!! LOL, you will be first in line for the Topshop dress if I get rid-I seem to have more of a 'connection' with my cheap stuff that I do the high end designer things in my wardrobe (?)

  18. Darn it, I was all set to go look for you on Speaker's Corner.

At first I was going to say I couldn't believe that TF said that to a girl, but then I realized that that's exactly what I expect from him!

  19. Hahaha! His perfume stinks, but it's good advice, although vulgar, just like Tom himself.
